Abigoliah Schamaun: Namaste Bitches

Underbelly Cowgate

Until 27th August, 7:40pm

If you like the title, you can be pretty certain this is a show you’ll enjoy. Namaste Bitches is a stand-up show from Abigoliah Schamaun chronicling yoga, enlightenment and poppers – and there’s something for you even if none of the above are your scene. Schamaun is a mass of energy and enthusiasm. Even with a ‘select’ audience she fills the room, and there is a considerable amount of laughter. The material covered spans from musicals, through Ultimate Frisbee on the Meadows, to cults and training as a yoga teacher without missing a beat. The atmosphere was warm and friendly, the limited elements of audience participation are completely justified, and there’s none of the usual terror of being on a front row at a comedy show. With a larger crowd I’m sure this would only be amplified.

A clear highlight for me, Schamaun’s material on Bikram Choudhury was as hilarious as it was alarming and only amplified by how much it is grounded in fact. The staging is well designed, with every element of the set vital to the show. Lighting is used to brilliant effect.

The show has laughs throughout, but the ending sequence is glorious. For me, the moments just preceding it felt a little rushed, but that’s probably more of a testament to the fact the hour just flew. Namaste Bitches was a thoroughly entertaining, surprising and well executed show, which was well worth taking the time out of a saturated Edinburgh Fringe to see.

Namaste Bitches is at Underbelly, Cowgate until 27th August at 7:40pm. For more information and tickets click here.
